HOW TO FIND INFORMATION USING THE INTERNET
The internet is a fantastic resource for all of us to use. It can be everything from a dictionary to a TV Guide. But how do you actually find the information you need, when you need it?
Research
The first few times you go looking may take some time, but as with everything, the more you practice, the quicker you get, so don't give up!
Try to think about the information you need in terms of a few key phrases or words. Since this is a computer services site, we'll look up some computer related information as an example.
How do I set up my router to connect to the internet?
First I would make a note of the make and model number of my router. These are usually found on a label underneath.
Then I would ask myself, " Did I buy this myself or was it supplied to me by my Internet Service Provider (ISP)"
If I bought it myself I would probably look for information on the manufacturers web site. If it was provided, I would look for information from my ISP first since they may have changed the way it works. If that failed, then I would try the manufacturer.
Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox and visit one of the major search engines such as Google (www.google.co.uk) or Yahoo (uk.yahoo.com)
Type in the make and model number of your router. You will then be presented with thousands if not millions of results. Avoid the coloured sponsored links at the top and sides unless they are specifically to the manufacturers web site, since these sites pay a fee to be there and want to sell you something.
Look through the headings in the list. You may find someone has asked a similar question, and the answer is available on another web site. If not then go directly to the manufacturers site and look for a SUPPORT section. You may only need to type in your product name and model again to be taken to a whole section of articles and user manuals providing the information you need.
Warning - Many so called experts help sites will tease you with a question, promising the answer if you register or pay them a fee. DON'T - the answers are generally available free if you look elsewhere, and I have signed up or paid a fee in the past, only to find that they did not have the answers or their so called experts were just a group of other internet users trying to be helpful, but grasping at straws.
Also beware of sites offering downloads of software such as Google Maps (which is free from Google) for a registration fee. One such site looks American but is actually run from Russia by a criminal organisation.
So there you have it. Ask me a question, and this is exactly what I do if I don't have the answer myself. Use it to check reviews of a product or service you are thinking of buying. Use it to check your childrens homework, or just look up t6he weather forecast and find out whats on telly tonight!
